Myth 1

Only middle-aged women suffer from varicose veins.

Кто угодно может иметь варикозную болезнь. Женщины и мужчины одинаково страдают нее в любом возрасте. Просто женщины гораздо чаще обращаются к врачу, а мужчины игнорируют симптомы.

Myth 2

Crossing your legs causes varicose veins

There is no evidence to support this claim. This myth was propagated at a time when patients after surgery or serious illness were in the hospital for extended periods and were sedentary. This lack of activity caused them to develop deep vein thrombosis. In the past doctors and nurses knew little if anything about this disease, as such they simply advised patients not to cross their legs. Our body is designed so that all points of the venous system that are subjected to high pressure are protected. And every time we squat, cross our legs or kneel down, blood clotswill not form in our legs.

Myth 3

Medication can cure varicose veins

While drug therapy can reduce pain and swelling, however it has not proven effective at treating the cause of varicose veins, or protecting healthy ones from the onset of the disease.

Myth 4

Removing varicose veins requires painful surgery and several weeks of rehabilitation

This view was based on antiquated treatment options. Today, modern laser technology, sclerotherapy, and the use of bioglue do not require hospitalization or general anesthesia at all. Patients are able to leave the clinic within an hour following treatment. These factors make treatment more appealing to patients who previously had delayed addressing this illness.

Myth 5

Varicose veins are only a cosmetic issue

Varicose veins occur due to problems with valves in the veins, which improperly direct the blood flow. If the valves are damaged, blood will move in the wrong direction, this leads to swelling of the legs, eczema, discoloration of the skin on the legs and formation of ulcers. Most troubling blood clots can form in the lumen of a vein as a result of stagnation of blood.

Myth 6

You can not cure varicose veins: they will come back in all cases

This was true in the past when old treatments were utilized, such as open surgical removal of veins. The success of modern treatment methods is based on the use of ultrasound duplex vein scanning, which allows us to note the location and size of all varicose veins, even in the case when they are deep under the skin and invisible to the naked eye. Ultrasound duplex scanning provides an opportunity to treat hidden varicose veins, which are usually the cause of spider veins. The elimination of these veins is what reduces the level of recurrent varicose veins.

Myth 7

Women should wait to treat varicose veins until after having children

Varicose veins increase during pregnancy and bring discomfort. The risk of thrombophlebitis is significantly higher in the last months of pregnancy or immediately after birth. Women will generally benefit from having early treatment, even before becoming pregnant.
